The Parkway has a convenient tilt down feature for rear vehicle access. A simple pull pin can be released to allow the rack to tilt down away from the back of the vehicle to allow access into the back of most SUVs, wagons and hatch backs. The Parkway includes soft rubber cradles to protect the bike frame while holding it securely to the dual arm supports. The rack hold safe and rigid into a vehicle's receiver hitch using Thule's anti-wobble hitch bolt which is far superior to a standard smooth pin found on lesser bike racks. A plain pin which is commonly used for towing draw bars does not cut it for bike racks that need to be bolted tight to the hitch.
To further enhance overall rack and bicycle stability, Thule includes a six foot cam-buckle strap that can be wrapped around the front wheels to prevent sway. Although no security options are included with the Parkway, there is a special metal loop welded to the rack's base which is a perfect lock down point for a Thule 538XT coil lock cable. Additionally, there is the option to lock the rack onto the hitch using Thule's STL2, Snug-Tite locking hitch bolt, this bolt takes the place of the stock non-locking hitch bolt that is included with the rack. It is possible to purchase both the 538XT and the STL2 as a key matched set which would make overall bike and rack security much easier to manage.
As with all hanging type racks, it is important to consider the bikes to be carried. Bikes carried on a hanging rack must have frames that are suitable to hang from the top tube. Ladies style frames with diagonal top tubes, bicycles with suspension components occupying the space under the top tube and many children's bikes may require an adapter to be carried properly. The Thule 982XT Frame Adapter is the solution for bikes that simply can not be held from it's own horizontal top tube.
Another consideration is bike spacing, hanging racks will be described as two, three, four or five bike models, however, this is a generalization. For example, on a four bike rack unless all four bikes can be positioned very close to one another without conflicts the rack may only accommodate three bikes.
